There is a combination of being in the middle of God’s wild creation, observing beauty, and the thrill of the hunt that sets something loose inside me. This feeling must go back to the beginning of time. Today, we pursue it like never before. Photography, writing, social media, guiding, and production of the newest gear all lures the hunter’s dollar and distracts the heart. While these crafty pursuits do open collaboration and opportunity, I fear the modern day approach threatens the mystery and nature of the hunt.
Ironically, it is the hunter who is the culprit. Innocent joy is lost in competition, fame, and dollars. The clamor of hunters and salesmen fighting for more Instagram followers, “needing” the latest gear, or arguments that ensue over land all steal the glory of the hunt. The art of photos, gear, and writing can be beautiful and are necessary to a point. As with anything though, what is the motivation? It is inevitable when money becomes involved for something special to be lost.
I confess fancy gear draws me, as does the desire to be a successful hunter in the eye of peers. But greater, I seek hunting for its true value; that is, the mystery that has enticed man since the beginning. Even more, my heart yearns for the refreshment of wilderness and man versus beast; to be a part of a mysterious wonder you can’t quite put your finger on. Our Maker was intentional about the thrilling mystery of hunting for that is how he is, a mysterious adventure.
